STRATEGY
AI speeds up execution. It doesn’t replace judgment. Confuse the two and you’ll automate your way into a brand that sounds like everyone else.
I teach founders to use AI every week, and the question I get most is “which tool” whereas it should be”where do I draw the line.”
Here’s my line.
- What’s safe to automate
First drafts, not final calls.
Let AI handle: first-pass copy you’ll edit in your own voice, competitor and market research, repurposing one piece of content into 4-5 formats, and reporting, which is, pulling numbers together so you’re not doing it manually.
These are volume tasks. AI is faster at volume than you are so let it do its thing.
- What you should never hand off
Positioning. Pricing. Brand voice judgment calls. Reading what your specific customer is actually afraid of and actually motivated by.
AI can describe customer psychology in general terms. It cannot tell you what your customer, in your category, in India, right now, is worried about spending money on.
That’s still your job.
- The test I use
Before automating anything, I ask: if this goes wrong, does it cost me money or does it cost me trust?
Wrong numbers in a report cost money, which is fixable.
A brand voice that sounds like a template costs trust, which is much harder to earn back.
Automate the first category freely. Guard the second category closely.
- Do you need a custom GPT, or is regular ChatGPT enough?
I will always and forever like you to build a custom GPT or have it built for you.
You may ask why!
This is because I do not want you to sound like everyone else. You started a business exclusively on your terms with a certain goal in mind. Why would you not build it a custom GPT or a custom Claude skill? Why would you not want to sound unique to your audience?
Build a custom tool and know that you can always keep tweaking it.
- Strategy first, always
I wrote about this in more depth here, the brands winning with AI right now spent months on strategy before they touched a single tool.
AI amplifies whatever plan you already have.
If you want help figuring out exactly where AI fits into your specific marketing, not generic advice, your actual plan, that’s what a strategy session with me covers.
