I don’t want to tell you to “just be consistent” or “just run more ads.” That advice works for big brands. It means nothing when you’re a small business trying to grow.
Here’s what I’ve seen across 14 years and 500+ brands.
Indian customers have changed how they buy. They want it on mobile, in their language, and right now. A simple website and generic ads are not enough anymore.
Marketing is psychology. So start with what your customer is feeling.
She’s scrolling on her phone, she’s a little unsure, and she wants an answer in 2 minutes. Now we know her.
So, build around that. Do these 4 things & I’ve put them in a priority list.
1. Move the sale into WhatsApp
Nobody wants to fill a long contact form or wait 24 hours for an email reply. It’s just like asking the kirana uncle. You ask, he answers, done.
- Connect WhatsApp Business directly to your Instagram ads and landing pages. Let people ask questions and see your catalogue inside the chat.
- Set up quick replies, cart-recovery messages and order-tracking updates. Super simple, and it runs without you.
- Use broadcast lists only around big moments: festivals, flash sales, shopping seasons.
2. Show up when someone searches locally
People no longer type two word searches. They ask their phone. They ask AI tools. They search “near me.”
- Update your Google Business Profile completely: exact category, working hours, clear service descriptions, real reviews.
- Create content for specific areas. “Best boutique studio in South Mumbai.” “Top B2B services in Thane.” One page for each area you serve.
This is how anyone searching for a marketing strategist for small business in India should find me too. Be specific about who you are and where you are.
3. Choose real over polished
Reels and Shorts are still the most cost-effective way to get seen in India. But polish doesn’t build trust. Authenticity does.
- Show behind-the-scenes footage, unboxings, and the product being tested.
- Put the founder on camera. Your story is the one thing a competitor can’t copy.
- Work with micro and nano creators, 5,000 to 50,000 followers. Their communities are tight and they trust them. Regional-language content from a relatable voice beats an expensive celebrity endorsement. It’s just like a friend recommending a salon versus a hoarding on the highway.
4. Plan around India’s calendar
India is not one market. It’s many.
Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid, Pongal, Onam each have their own energy.
Plan your stock, offers and creatives around these moments, not around a generic monthly calendar.
And language matters.
If you’re going into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, don’t rely on English alone. Run ads in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu or Bengali. Acquisition costs come down, and the connection feels real.
The no nonsense version
- Talk to customers on WhatsApp.
- Be findable locally.
- Show real people.
- Speak their language.
That’s the whole plan.
